Tongariro (3) Emerald Lakes

A good spot to have lunch - taken on Day 3. You can see hundreds of people descending the track down the ridge to the right. Tongariro Crossing is one of New Zealand's most popular day walks. Posted by Picasa

Tongariro (2) Looking back towards Mt Doom

Mt Doom at the back on a very clear but windy day (we climbed it two days before). In the middle distance you can see the track down the ridge, with Red Crater to the left. In front of Red Crater but out of sight are Emerald Lakes. Posted by Picasa

Tongariro (1) Mt Doom to Emerald Lakes

This is the first of three posts with pictures of our walk around the Northern Circuit in New Zealand (see our earlier post). These pics were taken on Day 1 (Mt Doom climb) and Day 2 (Tongariro Crossing).
This one was taken halfway up Mt Doom. Behind is Crater Lake with Blue Lake in the distance. Ketahati Hut is out of sight behind the ridge at top left.
Amanda on the summit of Mt Doom looking into the crater (or trying not to!). Our descent was a bit hair-raising, as we thought we would take a short cut back to Mangetapopo Hut, down the steepest part of the mountain. It proved harder than it looked and we were pretty tired by the time we reached flat ground again.
Tongariro Crossing (Day 2) - on the ridge with Red Crater to the right, Blue Lake behind.

Easter at Namua

Forget chocolate eggs, think beach fales on a tiny island off the coast, protection for turtles, 256 steps to a view of American Samoa, snorkelling, watching hermit crabs of all different shapes and sizes in all kinds of shells doing their thing, kayaking out past the reef to watch turtles playing, walking (and wading) around the island... Posted by Picasa
