Tongariro (1) Mt Doom to Emerald Lakes

This is the first of three posts with pictures of our walk around the Northern Circuit in New Zealand (see our earlier post). These pics were taken on Day 1 (Mt Doom climb) and Day 2 (Tongariro Crossing).
This one was taken halfway up Mt Doom. Behind is Crater Lake with Blue Lake in the distance. Ketahati Hut is out of sight behind the ridge at top left.

Our descent was a bit hair-raising, as we thought we would take a short cut back to Mangetapopo Hut, down the steepest part of the mountain. It proved harder than it looked and we were pretty tired by the time we reached flat ground again.
